Aging is a syndrome of progressive, universal and irreversible alterations. Endocrinology alterations in aging consist of insulin
resistance, hyperinsulinemia, increase of hydrogen peroxide and glucose blood level. At the beginning of aging process the Pancreaticcells
produce
more
insulin
in
order
is
keep
blood
glucose
within
normal
level.
But
the
persistent
of
hyperglycemia
condition
caused
the
pancreatic-cells
unable
to
produce
adequate
insulin
due
to
internal
factors
or
external
factors.
As
this
condition
progress,
would
be
disturbed
fasting
and
post-prandial
blood
glucose
(hyperglicemia).
Besides
insulin
resistance,
free
radicals
also
increased
as
a
consequence
of
failure
compensation
of
cells
in
the
body.
The
aim
of
this
study
is
to
determine
that
intermittent
and
daily
calorie
restriction
in
old
male
Wistar
rats
can
reduce
serum
hydrogen
peroxide,
and
blood
glucose
level.
The
method
of
this
study
was
an
experimental
study
with
post-test
control
group
design.
Twenty
four
male
Wistar
rats
about
12
months
old,
were
divided
into
four
equal
groups
and
each
group
contain
six
rats:
(i)
ad
libitum
fed
(control),
(ii)
2-1
intermittent
with
2
days
fed
and
1
day
fast,
(iii)
1-1
intermittent
with
1
day
fed
and
1
day
fast,
and
(iv)
40%
continuous
calorie
restriction
every
day.
Independent
variable
in
this
study
was
calorie
intake
and
body
weight.
Dependent
variables
were
hydrogen
peroxide
level
and.
Blood
glucose
level.
The
difference
of
each
group
was
analyzed
with
one way ANOVA and the least significant difference was analyzed by the use post hoc tests, using p < 0.05. The result of this study for
hydrogen peroxide and blood glucose level in control group with experimental groups were p 0.000 and p 0.001. There was positive
correlation between hydrogen peroxide level and blood glucose level r 0.791. We conclude that calorie restriction decrease hydrogen
peroxide level and as well as regulating of blood glucose level. The best one of this method is 40% calorie restriction.
